Local elections on the 29th showed the conservative and left wing parties losing ground. Left wing rebels used considerable violence to interfere with the elections, killing 21 candidates  and kidnapping 60 others in the process. Over 200 candidates withdrew in the face of the violence. The conservative party is running the country and apparently the people are not happy with the way things are going. Local politicians are under tremendous, often fatal, pressure from left and right wing groups to cooperate.
