Hubschraubergeschwader 64

October 9, 2010: The German Air Force has organized its first all-helicopter wing (Hubschraubergeschwader or HSG). The unit, HSG 64, has three sub-units. One does airlift and search and rescue, the second does combat SAR (or CSAR) and the third is for training, particularly transition from the UH-1D to the NH90). HSG 64 has 700 personnel and several dozen UH-1D helicopters (to be eventually replaced by NH90s, starting this year). German air force helicopters typically spend most of their time doing disaster relief, including helping with fighting forest fires. But they do train for military missions.
