Japan has demanded that the US agree to a reduction in the $2.5 billion that Japan contributes each year to the cost of keeping 37,000 US troops in Japan. The move, the Japanese say, reflects the problems of the Japanese economy and the booming US economy rather than any change in the strategic situation.--Stephen V Cole
