The US and Britain signed an agreement on 18 June which ended the US lease of bases on Bermuda. The lease had gone into effect on 27 March 1941 when the US traded fifty old destroyers for leases on British bases in the Western Atlantic. The bases were to be used by American air and naval forces to protect American shipping from German submarines. --Stephen V Cole
