India has officially placed the Prithvi-II missile into service. This has a range of 250km compared to the Prithvi-1 which could reach 150km. Both carry a 500kg conventional warhead. Critics in the Indian parliament have charged that advanced fighters such as the Su-30 would be a better choice as they carry eight tons of bombs and can be used more than once.Stephen V Cole
