Combat unit headquarters have, for the last few years, relied more and more on laptop computers, and lots of civilian software that has a direct military application. One example of this is the Urban Tactical Planner software. The current version, costing $50,000, allows scanned versions of existing maps, existing electronic maps and aerial photos to be enhanced via the software to better show elevation and militarily significant terrain. New maps can then be printed out and distributed to companies and platoons. Electronic versions of the maps are also sent out to commanders that will have access to a laptop while in action (as in armor units.)
