Armor: Chinese Replacement for RPGs

Archives

March 1, 2006: The Chinese army has begun issuing the PF-89, a portable 80mm light anti-tank weapon, to replace obsolete Soviet-era RPG-7 type weapons. Based on an older design, the PF-89 is nearly a yard long (90-cm). The launcher weights 4.1 pounds, and the rocket itself, about the same. Maximum effective range is reportedly only about 200 meters. Penetration is said to be 630mm, which makes it at least as lethal as most other RPG type weapons. China claims that the PF-89 is comparable to the American AT-4 weapon.
