Armor: July 23, 2005

The war in Iraq has resulted in the production of thousands of specially built armored humvees. These vehicles, the M1114 model, were originally only going to be built in small numbers (a few hundred) for military police. But now, over 4,000 are being built, at a cost of $205,000 each. This includes $70,000 for the cost of the basic humvee, plus $65,000 for the armor, and the rest for weapons, communications gear (including GPS, radio and blue force tracker satellite comm. gear). The M1114 has proved effective, and very popular, in Iraq. As designed, it was meant for convoy protection, and thats what it does a lot of in Iraq.
