For the first time in U.S. navy history, a marine officer is commanding an amphibious task force. Marine colonel Joe Medina commands seven ships (three amphibious, one cruiser, two destroyers and an attack submarine.) Expeditionary Strike Group 3 ships out with 2,600 sailors and 2,200 marines (of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit.)
