A South Korean government report revealed that, if North Korea attacked, the United States planned to 690,000 troops and 2,000 warplanes to reinforce South Korean forces. Actually, the number of American troops, according to the U.S. Department of Defence, would depend on what kind of attack North Korea launched and how well South Korean forces handled it. Currently, the United States has 300,000 military personnel overseas (about half of them in Iraq), out of a total of two million active duty and reserve troops. What South Korea would need quickly would be additional airpower, and in this respect, the United States is ready to respond rapidly. Most American naval and air force warplanes are available for overseas operations.
