Drug gangs, unhappy with a Roman Catholic archbishop's criticism of criminal involvement in politics, led to the murder of archbishop Isaias Duarte. FARC and the drug gangs try and buy the loyalty of local politicians, and terrorize those they cannot buy. Meanwhile, fighting continued in the rebel demilitarized zone, with 27 rebels killed.
