The Pentagon wants to replace the current military satellite communication system with a new one designed for modern highly-mobile coalition warfare. The current system grew as needed, and new systems were added to what was there (even if they didn't really fit). The idea is to design a new system from the ground up which is designed to incorporate everything added onto the old one (as well as all of the new concepts, missions, and capabilities which the current system cannot accommodate.) Broadband will be needed by swarms of UAVs transmitting real-time television pictures of the enemy to commanders at all levels.--Stephen V Cole
