Sierra Leone: November 22, 2000

Archives

Sierra Leone's former military dictator, Valentine Strasser, has been arrested in nearby Gambia. Strasse had entered Gambia on November 2nd and promptly ordered back to London, where he came from. Strasser was sent to exile in Britain as part of the 1996 deal that removed him from power. His current arrest in Gambia charges that he was carrying documents indicating he was planning another coup. Meanwhile, back in Siera Leone, the RUF is split over the recent ceasefire. Apparently most of the RUF fighters are against it, as is the chief battlefield commander, general Kallon.
