In western Nepal, Maoists raided high schools and abducted over a thousand students. The captives would be lectured about Maoist ideology for a few days, and volunteers for Maoist combat units solicited, or taken.
In Central Nepal, five troops were killed fighting Maoists. The rebels also kidnapped a journalist, who had written negative things about the Maoists.
