Charles Taylor, president of Liberia, is attempting to end the fighting in Sierra Leone by holding talks with the two Sierra Leonean warlords; Foday Sankoh, head of the RUF (Revolutionary United Front) and Johnny Koroma, of the AFRC (Armed Forces Revolutionary
Council). Foreign aid has been slow to come to Liberia because Taylor has been supporting the AFRC actions in Sierra Leone.
September 23; The government announced that it had regained control of the northwest, where rebels have rampaged for several weeks. Several hundred deaths have been reported, and many more injured. Over ten thousand refugees have fled the area. The surviving rebels have fled to their bases across the border in Guinea.
September 18; The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has brokered an agreement to monitor the Liberian-Guinea border to prevent fighting between soldiers from both nations, and Liberian rebels operating from bases in Guinea.
September 14; Several hundred armed invaders entered northwestern Liberia. The identity of the invaders is no known, although the likely suspects are renegade fighters from Liberia's seven year civil war. The government accuses Guinea of allowing the renegades to operate from bases in Guinea. Casualties are reported to be over 200 men, women and children. Several thousand refugees are fleeing the area. There are already 35,000 refugees from Sierra Leone in the area.
