China and Russia publicly demanded that North Korea stop developing nuclear weapons and to reform their economy. Both nations were the main sources of economic support throughout the Cold War. But after 1991, that aid diminished greatly, triggering a recession and famine in North Korea. Most foreign aid now comes from South Korea, Japan and the US. China and Russia are now major trading partners with these three nations.
