Only one of the army's six infantry battalions has mutinied, and the government is negotiating with the mutineers. The battalion, of about 500 troops, served nine months in Liberia, and were to be paid, via the UN, about a thousand dollars a month. But they were only paid for three months, and feared that senior officers or politicians had stolen the rest (not an unusual situation.)
