Taiwan and Macedonia have signed a defense cooperation accord. This is the only such accord between Taiwan and a European country. Macedonia switched its diplomatic recognition from China to Taiwan in January 1999, after Taiwan promised $300 million in aid and $25 million in technology. China vetoed the UN protective force for Macedonia in February 1999.--Stephen V Cole
