Taiwanese civilians, fearful that China will make good on its threats to attack if a pro-independence candidate for president might be elected, stocked up on non-perishable food and other emergency supplies. There was an increase in sales of airplane tickets for travel off the island. Most of the population, however, was unperturbed.
