US diplomats told locals that America had no intention of setting up permanent military bases in Central Asia. Kazakhstan is forming a peacekeeping unit, from volunteers, for duty in Afghanistan. These troops would not be combat troops, but would escort aid deliveries, guard borders and provide medical and engineering support.
