  Russia, and the five Central Asian states that were once part of the Soviet Union, have signed a long term mutual defense agreement. This formalizes what Russia has been doing since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Russian troops and technical advisors are stationed in all of these Central Asian nations.
