The Angolan Army (MPLA) said it captured the town of Cachimo from UNITA. Cachimo is a diamond-mining center northeast of Luanda. An Angolan government spokesman said 15 UNITA guerrillas died in combat in the city. Cachimo has been a major source of diamonds UNITA sells to finance its military operations. In another report, AFP said that the Angolan government is using Polish military experts to help create a military modernization plan for Angolan forces. During the Cold War, both Polish and East German technical experts helped MPLA forces in their war against UNITA.
