On May 5, UNITA guerrillas launched a major attack in the town of Caxito (near Luanda). UNITA claimed 37 Angolan government troops died in the battle. A subsequent report from Western sources said 100 people died in the Caxito battle. UNITA rebels struck near the town of Uije on both May 8 and May 9. One man was reported killed.
