The Angolan government (MPLA) issued a statement that said the Angolan Army had taken complete control of Quimbele, in northern Angola. Quimbele has an airfield and was at one time a UNITA supply base. Subsequent reports said that a series of engagements had occurred in mid-September between UNITA and Angolan Army units in and near Quimbele. The battle of Quimbele ended on September 18. The area is near the Angola-DRC border.
