Surface Forces: South Korea Replaces The 1980s

Archives

December 12, 2016: South Korea has ordered eight new Tae Geuk class OPVs (Offshore Patrol Vessels) for its coast guard. These are 500 ton, 62 meter (201 feet) long ships that can accommodate up to 40 crew and passengers (usually specialists). They have a top speed of 72 kilometers an hour and endurance of about one week while cruising at about 36 kilometers an hour. Armament will be two autocannon (30mm or 20mm) and four 12.7mm machine-guns.

These four OPVs will cost $28 million each and be in service by 2020. This is part of a larger ($377 million) program to replace 30 older OPVs built in the 1980s and get it all done by 2020.
