Australia has abandoned plans to refit its ANZAC frigates for long-range air defense and ballistic-missile defense, as the project has proven too expensive. It would have involved cutting the ships in half and inserting a new hull section to carry the more extensive radar and missile systems. Instead, the ANZACs will get a much less extensive refit involving improvements to their self defense against anti-ship missiles.--Stephen V Cole
