Policing The Big Empty

August 7, 2008: This year, U.S. Air Force Predator UAVs are expected to fly over 120,000 hours. Last year they did 82,000 hours, and in 2006 they flew 50,500 hours. The Predators are particularly in demand for Afghanistan operations. Lots of relatively empty areas in Afghanistan, places where the bad guys like to move around. Predators are ideal for staking out chunks of this emptiness and monitoring it for hostile activity on a 24/7 basis. The troops cannot get enough of that service. Moreover, the Hellfire missiles carried by Predators are ideal weapons for attacking whatever hostiles are discovered in the big empty. Large groups of bad guys can be tracked by a Predator, while friendly ground forces, or a manned aircraft (with more firepower) close in to deal with the situation.
