Raytheon's bid to supply Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missiles to Britain includes a low-cost option to use an advanced rocket engine instead of a ramjet. It had been thought that a ramjet would be needed to achieve the required range, but Raytheon says its new rocket design can do the job. --Stephen V Cole
