Warplanes: March 7, 2000

The US Air Force has temporarily grounded 198 of its 546 KC-135 aerial tankers after finding a problem with the stabilizer in the tail section. (The Pentagon insisted that this had no relationship to the crash of an MD83 jetliner which also had a problem with the stabilizer.) Some lower-priority missions will be delayed or canceled until the planes can be put back into service. --Stephen V Cole
