by Ralph E. Eshelman, Scott S. Sheads, & Donald R. Hickey

Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2010. Pp. xii, 412. Illus., maps, chron., appends., notes, biblio., index. $67.00. ISBN: 080189235X

Essentially an encyclopedic dictionary of the War of 1812 as it affected the Chesapeake Bay area.

The work, a volume in the series " Johns Hopkins Books on the War of 1812 ”, is divided into five chapters.  The first gives a brief general overview of the war.  This is followed by a chapter that provides a more detailed look at events in the Chesapeake region, using a question-and-answer format (e.g., “What were the principal campaigns?”, etc.).  There follow chapters covering, in alphabetical order, places that were of some importance in the war in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.  Although the entries are place-oriented, there is a wealth of detail on people and events. These entries are supplemented by a fairly detailed chronologyand a series of appendices.

A handy reference for anyone seriously interested in the War of 1812.
