The Evolution of the Roman Army under the Republic

Originally published in 2018, and now available in paperback, in The Army of the Roman Republic, Prof Sage (University of Cincinnati, Emeritus) gives us a survey of the evolution and history of Roman Army from the eve of the founding of the Republic (509 B.C.) to its transition into the Empire in the civil wars of 49-30 B.C.

Throughout, Sage doesn't just give us the "facts", but offers analyses of the available evidence, much of which is rooted in legend, through a critical evaluation and comparison of the surviving literature, while also drawing on archaeological evidence.

The Army of the Roman Republic is valuable read for anyone with an interest in Roman history, its principal flaw is the lack of maps, as Sage covers a great many campaigns and battles across all Italy and many adjacent areas.
