NORFOLK (Aug. 27, 2011) The guided missile destroyers USS Ross (DDG 71), USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), the amphibious dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) and the guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) are safely moored at Naval Station Norfolk as Hurricane Irene passes over the area. Vice Adm. Daniel Holloway, commander of U.S. Second Fleet, ordered most ships to sortie to minimize damage to ships, piers and support equipment. Hurricane Irene made landfall near Cape Lookout, N.C. as a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 85 miles-per-hour.
