MARINE CORPS AIR GROUND COMBAT CENTER TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. (Dec. 8, 2005) -- The battlefield for those units deploying to Iraq is often found within the perimeters of cities and villages. It is an environment that can be constrictive and fought under tightperimeters. The enemy in Iraq has the advantage of surprise, concealment, and civilian presence. The ability for Marines to makeimmediate decisions, and for unit leaders to successfully lead theirsubordinates is vital to defeat an enemy in urban terrain.

From Dec. 6 to Dec. 8, 1st Tank Battalion joined forces with LimaCompany, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, for a live-fire militaryoperations in urban terrain training exercise at Combat Center Range210. The training was in an effort to expose the Marines of both the tankbattalion and infantry battalion to a live-firing urban operation, saidLt. Col. Aaron T. Slaughter, battalion commander, 1st Tank Battalion.
It is critical that the Marines are exposed to reacting to enemy fireand various suicide bombs in confined areas, said Slaughter. Theability to engage threats and stop conflicting fires, to effectivelypursue the enemy, and clear buildings is essential for success andsurvivability in an urban environment.
