Information Warfare: Indian Early Warning System Succeeds And Fails

Archives

March 7, 2013: Last July India got a chance to use its new Cyber War early warning system. Developed over the previous three years, the system was meant to let everyone in the government and military know a major attack via the Internet was imminent. Last July a warning went out and was ignored. The attack did arrive and over 12,000 user accounts were breached and an enormous quantity of military information was taken. The targets of the attack were those involved with improving defenses against an attack from China. This made it clear that it’s not enough to have an early warning system, you also have to get the cooperation of those you are protecting and ensure that they take proper defensive measures when they get a warning. India is now working on that.
