Subject: Should we abolish the RAAF combat fleet??
DropBear    6/13/2005 4:53:55 AM
In response to lacrobat's comment wrt "Why not cut the JSFs entirely?" I am interested to know how many of you believe the F-111, F-18 and Hawk127 are a complete waste of time, resources, money, training, funding, manpower etc etc etc... What would you spend the allocated funds on otherwise? You know my views, what are yours...

Have you forgotten the valiant defence of Darwin with a few planes? It wasn't the army or navy that drove back the swarms of Zeroes.

Repilse and Prince of Wales had nothing to do with Oz air power doctrine. That was an arrogant failing by the Poms to believe that these fine ships wouldn't have any real opposition. Funnily enough, it was AIRPOWER that sunk these two ships. They wern't sunk by enemy ships.

You're quite right. That's my point, the simple fact that Britain was prepared to put it's ships in harms way doesn't mean we have, or had, to adopt the same approach. If we had proper aircover over Malaya, during WWII, the game would have been different.

>>>I think he is actually saying that JSF numbers will decline if the AWD's go ahead. Not that we should buy more jets at the expense of the boats. Besides, is anyone else here concerned that THREE boats are budgeted at $6 Billion?? $10-15 Billion would buy 100 JSF. I just hope the AWD program doesn't blow out beyond that figure. P.S. I heard an Anzac cost $500 million to build, is $2billion for the AWD justified?? Where is the cost - extra missiles, radar or the "buy Oz" phenomena. Just curious... <<< if anything is going to threaten F-35 numbers, it will be the JSF programs balooning costs, and they havnt even begun production. I am more concerned that 1 plane will cost $150million Considering that the AWD's will be countless times better than the ANZAC's, being only 4 times as much is fairly reasonable.

I'd be quite shocked if a JSF is that expensive. $40-50M is more likely.

I'd be quite shocked if a JSF is that expensive. From what I've heard around the traps we could be looking at upwards of $80M or more if the US Congress decides to scale back on the number the US buys. If some of the rumours coming out of Washington come true we could be looking at $150M a copy. If it got that high I'd dump the JSF and just go for the F/A-22 and a whole bunch of TacToms and USAV's.

the RAAF at the end of the war was the 4th largest in the entire world!! hardly weak, i would argue that our navy at the time was the 'weakest' (it was still strong but compared to the army and airforce...)

"If it got that high I'd dump the JSF and just go for the F/A-22 and a whole bunch of TacToms and USAV's." - and drop one expensive multi-role aircraft for an even more expensive single-role aircraft, no thanks, even with missiles, UAVs, etc.

If it got that high I'd be quite chuffed. We could then switch camps back to Boeing and DB would get his beloved $50M Super Bug. I know one current ARDU pilot who would be happy to see the SH as oposed to JSF. Here's hoping chaps... :)

FO it may well have been but Malaya/Singapore was not at the end of the war. By that time many of our troops (if they had not alreday died0 had spent the better part of three years in captivity. You're not arguing are you that we had adequate air cover for the army in Malaya are you?
