Subject: Lame ship names

What is the WORST name given to a warship And the BEST? My choice is the WW2 Royal Navy - HMS Pink. Not very macho or enspiring is it? Do you think the crew forgoed the traditional Rum and Beef for Tea and scones? I think HMAS Vampire - A Daring class Destroyer had the right choice. Could we see this name return for any of the proposed AAW Destroyers for Oz?

As far as having the longest ship names, that award goes to the Italians with the Abruzzi class cruiser, Luigi Di Savoia Duca Degli Abruzzi (just thought I'd throw it in).

HMS Kelly: Destroyer commanded by Earl Mountbatten, sunk under his command. Sad name. On the other hand, Warspite. Beautiful name for a fighting ship.

What about Iron Duke? I think it Should be updated to Rolled Homogenous Armour Duke or Tungsten Duke - or Depeleted Uranium Duke - Carbon Monofibre Duke........ Iron is compaitively soft by today's industrial standards. Pucka

Duca d'Aluminum? of course, the hull number could be the alloy type: 1435, 6061, etc).

I remember listening to NPR during the early days of the Falklands war, when the British task force was still on its way. They did a whole program comparing British ship names with the Argentine ship names. Conclusion: the RN had some cool names for ships. The USN always seems to name its ships after people or places. No adjectives.

Iron Duke is so named, not because of any attempt to sound 'tough', but because it was the nick-name of the 1st Duke of Wellington, famous 18th/19th c military commander. Oh, and he was so nicknamed because he was SO unpopular in his brief period as Prime Minister, that he had iron shutters put on his windows...

I know that, but updating the name to something harder..... In the tradition of that, what about the USS Teflon President (AKA Bill Clinton)? Also why does the US Navy have a USS Winston S. Churchill (an AB) and not the RN (unless I'm missing something). There are some Aboriginal names in the RAN that may seem funny - HMAS NILLUMBILLIK, or if we start to name them after Aboriginal groups, we could have the HMAS YORTA YORTA and HMAS DJA DJA WURRUNG. Pucka

I'd imagine that, quite simply put, the RN doesn't have a Winston S Churchill because a) The RN doesn't name ships in that form, it would simply be the Churchill; and b) it doesn't fit into any of the current class themes. As a rule, at the moment, the RN tends to favour places over people as this causes more people to be interested in individual ships ('ooh, it's named after our town!' etc)..

The USS Winston S Churchill does have a link to Britain though, through virtue of it's name it permanantly has a British exchange Officer, the current is a communications officer I think.
