Subject: The China Syndrome & the British Navy
human7    7/10/2004 10:00:29 AM
If China launches an invasion of Taiwan, the United States would most certainly react. (This whole notion of ambiguity is American PR.) The question is would the United Kingdom would the stand idly by or would they help to repel the Chinks?

It was done intentionally as to pre-mock responses like the one you just made.

Bull. You just let your racism slip that's all and followed with a lame attempt at covering it up. You could at least have tried saying that it was a joke or shortened term like "Jap."

Well if you think it's beneficial to the discussion to seem like a racist ass, that's completely up to you.

On one hand, before Iraq, i would've said probably not, as they're not obligated to. OTOH, intervening in Iraq was support for the War on Terror, which doesn't apply in the taiwan situation. In other words, I don't know.

political suport.. deffinately military suport... well, i don't know... that's a harder one. but i'll give you my opinion... what could Britian 'really' do to help? Britian has an army of 110,000 men... China has the largest army on earth. Britian has a strong navy... but if China has the strenth to take on the USN then the RN wont make any impact. and as for the RAF... a few hundred primarily strike fighters taking on some 3000 chiniese fighters... well that's a no brainer. so basicly, if china is powerful enough to defeat Taiwan and the American forces then the British help wont make the slightest bit of difference. if it swings the other way then Britian won't really be able to contribute enough to significatly bolster the winning side. so for this war Britian could only REALLY help by offering political suport or with reconstruction / peacekeeping help in the post war days. Well i could think of several think the UK could do to help. - Send attack subs to patrol the aera, the USA sub numbers are going down so UK support won't hurt. - C17 a drop in the bucket i know but still... - Naval helicopter lift capabilty, assuming all invincible class + ocean class + others ships are ready these could be used to provide ASW, and send helo's to bolster taiwan's defenses - AWACS, always short on demand - Futhermore, the tornado's could join the theatre from japan or even based on taiwan. The long range of the planes will be appreciated. Just look at GW1.... - And in general all NATO ships will appreciated. and NATO really could provide some assitance here - in the future...flat tops are planned. Yes, the USA could go at it alone, but the 5% or 10% UK forces would be appreciated greatly. Combine this with other EU forces and ww'll probably get this up to 10-20%, That very nice to have.

But the bulk of Europe would not defend Taiwan. Taiwan is a democracy. But the mainland has more money. Socialism and liberalism are the politics of spoiled children. Europe is only interested in democracy for itself. Europe loves to critisize everything the US does as being done for "moneyed interests", but Europe will sit back and condemn the US for supporting Taiwan so they [Europe] can win points with the mainland so as to improve their trading position. Blair supported the War in Iraq. The bulk of the British people did not. I would not bet on seeing too many British troops anywhere in the future.

Actually the majority did support the war, its just that the lunatic left was very vocal. It all depends on the premise of war. If it came about, then it would no doubt arise through a brief, five to six year period of a ?Cold War? between China and the West. The circumstances would be different, China is invading, China is throwing its weight around. Therefore I?d assume that if British force was required, it would be supplied. As for what we could give, well, a Navy capable of boll locking the Chinese would come to mind. There isn?t a lot that could breach the defences of a T-45, as Britain could provide sizeable AAW Destroyers, not to mention its fair share of surface TLAM from the T-45?s and RV Tritons. Back this up with a Queen Elizabeth laden with around 40 to 50 F-35?s and organic Early Warning Aircraft, as wells as Maritime Surveillance and Strike from Nimrod MK4?s, could easily provide aerial dominance in which ever sector the task force was operating, possibly as a shield for the Taiwanese Navy. Not to mention the subsurface threat; possibly the best trained crews in larger and faster Astute?s, than anything the Chinese have or will get? Using Spearfish, superior to anything the Chinese have? With TLAM capabilities? The Royal Navy of this future conflict will most certainly be a force to be reckoned with. Not to mention when you look behind the ?glitz? of the platforms, you see the real quality. Expensive and tough training, invaluable experience, a superior battle doctrine which has been proven, all puts the ?glitz? into perspective. I?m sure a British CBG will be most welcome.

british lion, i think you dismiss the strengths britain would bring to an allied conflict against china. especially the naval power britain would contribute. but would the brits join, i dont know, the pacific is on the complete other side of the world, so would they really care as long as they werent attacked. the rest of europe certainly wouldnt, they only fight large wars that they start.

the rest of europe certainly wouldnt, they only fight large wars that they start. Whaha sure. So we (the dutch) didn't join the US in gwI? and in kosovo? The same goes for many countries in europe. in GWI there was a big european contribution to the air forces (and ground). The second GW well, most europeans (even brittish) didn't think that this war was justified. An geees don;t look now but ven the US senate thinks they wouldn;t have gone with current knowledge. As for Taiwan, europe has strong economical ties with this country eventhough china is against it. When Taiwan is attacked the US will lead, europe (most of it) will follow.....
