I think Tucano does not require very skilled pilots. It is, basically, WWII style combat flying. Like Ju-87 or Il-2.

While the Super Tucano is a trainer that does not mean that it does not require refined Pilot's skills to fly in combat. It has acrobatic performance capacity (like most trainers) and a complex cockpit plus pilots that perform ground support have to be trined in infantry tactics, etc. so they know what they are doing in the ground.

"Less certain is the impact of the corruption that is still rampant in the Afghan military and the tendency for technical people, like pilots and maintainers, to leave the military for better paying and safer jobs in the civilian sector."

I don't think think is any lack of certainty about the above..  Afghanistan simply lacks a functional economy that can afford any kind of air force..  corruption and incompetence will see those planes scrapped or sold on the black market in no time at all.. ah the joy of our tax dollars at work..

At least sold on the black market would mean someone making some money.

Those Spartans were sold off at Aluminum scrap prices..

@HR

One can't even think about flying jet without years of training. I don't know about Tucano pilots, but during WWII pilots were trained in weeks on not much different planes. So, even if it is 6 months, it is better than waiting for years to have some pilots available. They don't have to use all possible ordnance right away. I have an article with mile long URL where the official is quoted saying that Tucano is a right choice where mission is critical and the time is short. I believe he refers to (relatively) short training time.
