Subject: Is it wrong to love the Panavia Tornado?
skrip00    1/18/2006 10:15:37 PM
Something about that aircraft that I love. Its design is sleek, and it can truck a good bomb load. Flies low and fast and penetrates deep into enemy airspace.

Kinda reminds me of a time when aircraft had to fly lower than the trees to avoid tracers and missiles to deliver bombloads on target in support of friendlies.

To me, Panavia Tornado resembles the leftovers in my erector set after I?d built something cool as a kid. Even Harrier looks more graceful. Now that ?Vark was a real beautiful piece of low-level artwork ? v^2

I like the mean look of the Tornado, but it was underpowered IMO. The new EJ200's would sure spruce up that performance of her to the level it needs to be at.

I love everything about the Tornado. I think it is a fantastic bird that has served well in strike/interceptor/SEAD/ECR and maritime duties. All in the one airframe! link :)

Agreed, love that aircraft!!!!! Looks mean and does the job it was designed to do well. Having lived for a while in the english "lake district" (Cumbria), and seen them on a regular basis doing extreme low level terrain following as I looked down on them from various hill tops, well, it was seriously aweinspiring. Love the Tornada, love the Jag, F-111 also seriously cool, basically just love strike aircraft.

My favorite European Aircraft, it was built for war and left no doubt about it.

Too bad it was (is) a hell at maintenance... a nightmare!

Love it! I wonder if it would have been worth it to upgrade it and combine the various roles into the same version?

aesthetically speaking, the tail fin looks too big for the tornado,

I have always liked the Tornado... Perhaps if there are delays in the new offensive air system requirement, we will see a GR.5, with EJ2000 engines and other improvements developed for the Eurofighter.

Will almost definitely see a GR 5, maybe even higher, the GR 4 is a Mid life update, lots of life left.

skrip00    RE:Tornado - They really should upgrade it!   1/19/2006 10:40:33 AM
New engines, new design... they should make a Tornado that is analagous to the F/A-18E... A new design relying on whats proven with more multirole, lower RCS, easier maintenence, new electronics, new engines, new radar, more payload. It would make a great secondary project to the Eurofighter, and a good compliment to it. Think of it as this: EU can have both aircraft for the 21st century. One for air superiority, and one for all around superiority.

By the time it comes out everyone will already have the F-35.

maintenance was easy on the Tornado... easy access, lots of LRUs, quick engine change...

So, why not redesign and reproduce the aircraft then? New engines, even less maintenence, more payload, better radar, lower RCS, etc. Like the F/A-18E. Many of you euro people like to talk about keeping the industry alive, a new update Tornado could be it... Maybe a CV variant as well. Like the F/A-18E.
