Subject: HALO jump from an b-2 stealth bomber
Sucari    4/10/2007 9:59:43 PM
Would it be possible to make a stelathy HALO jump from a B2 bomber, to get into places that cannot due to the radar detectability of standard planes. I.E. dropping a SOF into hostile territory...I.E. Iran or something

I suppose its possible.

I would imagine it might even be possible from a F-35 bay. Possibly with the jumper wearing a birdman suit with engines. This would not only allow a stealthy jump but provide additional control and distance.

The main issue would be speed, generally you want a fairly slow speed before jumping out of a plane. Whats the stall speed of either a F-35 or B2?

Even if possible...let's think about passenger comfort...that's a LONG trip...

No worse than a emergency exit from a submarine.. Or hanging off the side of a apache.

It would be one hell of a mission.

I guess that might work if the space shuttle was weathered in or something.

I don't know but it sounds like you've got the opening scene of the next James Bond movie;)!

John Ringo mentions it in "Ghost".

Like many things in life, the question isn't so much CAN it be done, but is there a real reason to do so?

you'd have to eject a squad, otherwise that B61 rotisserie launcher will be under utilised.... ;)

each B61 mount can carry 350kg, so that leaves a lot of room for fat specialists to go jumping...

I think there are better ways to do an insertion.....

It's very possible. You could probably get a stick in there at least. Trust me though, if it is possible, then it has been tested before by some SOF unit.

ever seen the rotary launcher of a B2? good luck to them... ;)

OTOH, if we want to treat this as a Disney event, you could stick a specialist into a B61 cannister, add kerkanya wings and turn it into a human glider ala Yves Rossy

A JSOHGC for want of a better acronym....

I was referring to the F-35 option, not the B2 (I have no knowledge of the B2). I remember reading about how some of the first Force Recon operators tested jumping out of some jet aircraft, and although it was a tight fit, a full stick made it.
