Well let's see, we've got SP system and towed systems. How are we supposed to compare those? Also, what are the criteria for comparison? For example, if the user has a requirement for a towed system, M-109 ain't even gonna place. You can not define a "best" anything until you know what a specific customers requirements are, what they need that system to do. That goes for rifles, pistols, tanks, planes and artillery. All of these "best" threads that spead like fungus on this board are just mental masturbation, completely meaningless, because not one of them EVER addresses that fundamental issue.

That's why I sometimes try to derail them before the French/Amercian war breaks out.

Actually G6 chassis with AS90 ERO turret with 52 cal tube would rule if ever marketed. I admit however I am biased towards the AS90 turret, and I think the G6 chassis is one of the most awesome looking vehicles on the planet, it just looks cool :)

Eloquently put Mark F and absolutely right. By age: M109, in whatever configuration, well past its used by date (rendered obsolete by PzH2000 and AS90). FH-77, very complicated, neither fish not fowl. G-6, too big, needs stabilisers, not sure about ammo handling ergonomics. The key arty parameters are range and rate of fire. Given the same ammo and roughly similar barrel lengths then differences in range are marginal and not tactically significant. Modern guns all have similar rates of fire (ie 3 rd burst in 10 secs, 6 or more rpm for a few minutes, sustained 2 rpm). Ability to go thru the move, stop, shoot, move cycle quickly is emerging as an issue, none of the 3 have a very good story here compared to the best. Covering a wide arc quickly is increasingly important, which puts 'proper' tracked SPs ahead. The thorny question is mobility, tracks give the best surface tactical mobility, the lighter towed guns can be heli underslung. Wheels can be argued to give better operational mobility. Stategic mobility towed are both best (light weight for air) and worst (lane length with towing vehicle in ships).
