Subject: Active Alamo AA-10 R-27

The R-27 has excellent kinematics but is held back by the SARH head. An active version was rumored but never came into being. Any reason why? It seems like the powerful Su series could easily lift the extra weight vs the R-77. Wouldn't it be a typically Russian solution to rip the head off one missile and put it on another?

Firstly, R-27 has crappy kinematics.

Secondly, R-27AE did not emerge due to USSR's breakup and fact that R-27 family replacement i.e. R-77 was already on table. Well, later it turned out Russian Air Forces could not finance R-77 acquisitions (basic MiG-29 and Su-27 variants cannot utilize it) so its production started solely for export. However some parts of R-27AE design like active radar homing seeker were ready later they were transferred to China also from Ukraine as I remember correctly.
