giblets    3/3/2006 7:30:40 PM
Australia has apparently signed on to buy 4 of these aircraft, joining the USAF and the RAF as operators

Canada is also now looking to buy 3 strategic heavy lift and the AN-124 is the likely competitor to the C-17III. I hope the latter wins.

Great comparison of price and capacity (in 1998 $) link In summary: Say at least $175 million /C-17, and about $25million / AN-124 Capacity: the AN-124 has double the capacity of the C-17. 1/2 the aircraft, 1/2 the support costs. I suppose if you add $50+ million each you could get the AN-124 with western engines - GE or PW. Additionally, the AN-124's look as cool as a C-5 on the tarmac. Good grief - it looks like even the US should buy 20 or so AN-124's - could even be good for US/Russian relations.

This 2004 article: link puts the price of AN-124's at about $80million (huge jump from 1995 $27million), and at about $250million with western engines! C-17's are probably about the same price or more now.

refer to the australian forum for my opinion on Ants 124. personally, I'd rather eat broken glass than ever get inside another one.

I do note that NATO in January contracted to have a couple of AN-124's on standby for strategic airlift. Doesn't make them any better, but is nonetheless interesting to note.

It should have bought another 4. A continent Island that will in the future need to contain Chinese dominance must be able to have great transportation capabilities that will give it greater deterrence. They're expensive but  Australia must have a strong strategic mobility to adequatly defend itself.

Are you suggesting that Oz could fall under Chinese dominance?

How would buying four more change this?

How will the Chinese get here in the first place?

Curious.

best way to avert war is to prepare for one. The fact of the matter is that china is gaining strength at an incredible rate. In my opinion Australia must prepare for all such scenario's. Therefore a strong strategic transport for Aussie is important, giving it a greater force projection, creating deterrence, providing greater strategic planning and an overall necessity due to the largess of its land assets. You ask me why? but I ask why not? Australia is trying to expand its military force and this would be a great enhancement its not sexy like the F-18's or F-35's but it is just as crucial.
