Subject: airlifting troops (747)

Many years ago Boeing did a study on how many troops a long range 747 could transport to the middle east. I don't remember the specifics but they said they could out perform the C5A in terms of fuel consumption, time to destination etc. They also did studies on creating multi-level seating and even horizontal placement (sardine seating or laying). I beleave the 747 is a much safer aircraft than the C5A ever will be!

Maybe its far better in civilian conditions and when the maintenance level can be kept very high at every moment, but I don´t think that a purely civilian aircraft could achieve ruggedness of military aircraft nor it will be able operate in really hard conditions. Of course such a plane would be useful when building up a force in friendly area like now in the Gulf where Americans are moving their equipment in commercial ships. But in real combat situations.. I wouldn´t count on it.
