It's been going since the early 50's. It is advertised as the longest continious running aircraft C-130Js are still comming off the line at a rate of about one a month. Company appears to have overcome many of the earlier problems with the J and it has been performing well. With the new performance specs on the J it has improved most performance specs over the H by 30% or so. Higher, faster further etc.. Max effort take off empty in around 700ft. Really has no competitor. The F-150 of the cargo world.

But it will have a competitor when A400M comes into service. Did you see that South Africa has signed up to the programme? South Africa will order between eight and 14 aircraft, for delivery between 2010 and 2014. Also Chile has signed a letter of intent with Airbus Military for the purchase of up to three A400M transports to replace its air force Lockheed Martin C-130B/H Hercules from late next decade. The decision, which dashed Lockheed?s hopes of selling its C-130J into Latin America for the first time, is expected to lead to a contract signature by December 2005. It would really make more sense for the US to buy a A400M sized aircraft rather than persist with the C-130. Regardless of how good the C-130J is, its biggest drawback is its size. For example, the C-130 struggles to carry Stryker, whereas it fits into the A400M easily. It's the volume more than anything else that is A400m's strength.

The A400m fits in nicely between the C-130 and the C-17, and cheaper than the C-17. ABout the only thing the A400m can't carry is a MBT, so basically aimed towards forces who can't afford a C-17, but want more than a C130

Especially among transport aircraft there are technological plateaus: I.e. the gain in performance of a new plane cannot offset the developmentcost. It has been seen before: The C-47 (saw one in the air just yesterday: the RDaAF museum-piece)/Ju52-3m generation is just one example.

Hey Folks, What about replacing the KC-135 with KC-130J. It could be a one for one replacment, or about 500 KC-130j produced Sincerely, Keith

Right about volume being a limiting factor more often than weight. This is why they are making and marketing the stretched J which is becomming the configuration of choice. It can cary two more pallets and more jumpers. Does not help with the stryker which is limited by the width of the cargo bay.

The Marines use KC-130s. They are not the equivalent of the KC-135. Receiving jets are forced to go to inefficient altitudes and slow airspeeds to suckle from the Herc. It doesn't begin to carry enough fuel for C-17s, C-5s and big bombers and it lacks the legs to rendezvous out in the middle of the ocean.

The KC-1130J does a bit better, higher altitude, longer legs but not the capacity you probably want for a C-17 or C-5.
