The legislature has approved a law allowing alternative service for those conscripted for the armed forces. Currently, 400,000 young men a year are conscripted, but at least ten percent of those refuse to serve. and additional thousands bribe their way out. Alternative service (in hospitals and the like) will be 50 percent longer than the one to three years conscripts currently serve.
