The government has asked for former soldiers to rejoin in order to deal with the LURD rebels. Some 4,000 soldiers have left the army since Charles Taylor came to power in 1997 (and 2,200 of those in the last year). At least 300 of these veterans were seen assembling by the defense ministry. Rebels have been reported operating 55 kilometers from the capital.
