The LURD rebel offensive has petered out as a military threat, but remains a formidable source of rumors. The most outrageous (but not completely dismissed one) is that the "LURD offensive" is a government scam to obtain sympathy from the UN (which is mad at the government for dealing in diamonds with various rebel groups.) Other rumors have to do with government corruption and the inability of the army to deal with a small, ramshackle rebel outfit like LURD.
