Let me get this straight the Morthern Alliance moves into Kabul, leaves the Afganis living there alone (for the most part), but starts hunting down and killing the Arabs (i.e. non-afgani muslims that were supporting the Taliban). Now the UN wants Arab countries to send arab troops to Afganistan to act as police and peacekeepers. Is it just me or does seem like a bad idea.

Is it just me or does seem like a bad idea. -- Yes that's right, except the peace keepers would be Muslim (Indonesian, Turkish) and only incidentally Arab (Jordanian). (Pretty much like the present "Arabs", who are not all Arab either. The idea seems to be to shape the future of Afghanistan in a moderate Muslim direction. Historically the Afghans haven't been all that pious. The British found the Afghans far less religious than themselves -- very uninterested in saying their prayers (though still blood-curdlingly anti-Christian and anti-Hindu). In present circumstances I think the UN force is a great idea, but the peace keepers must be peace keepers and not brutal aggressors. The force must be built with sensitivity and gentleness to a war-ravaged land as its top priority. This means: * Baby blue helmets and white vehicles. * Peace keepers must be unarmed. (No ammo. No bayonets for that matter.) * Lines of communication must be by mail and all requests for backup must go through channels all the way up to the Secretary General and back down to the trooper on a mountain 20,000 ft high. * Authorization for self-defence must require unanimous agreement to at least five people who have contradictory interests and don't like each other, who can't and won't (French!) speak the same language, who can't conveniently be contacted all at the same time if at all, and none of whom will be held individually accountable for results. * There should be no exit conditions, at all, ever. * And I should get to nominate who goes. (I'll share the privilige with my friends her of course.) For I've got a little list ... All barking mad insurgents whose clothes need more detergents, The are wanted on my list. For they'll none of them be missed ... (etc.)

Evlstu - are you really surprised at the ideas(?) that get floated by the UN? This one is totally consistent with it's political behavioral patterns. David - LOL! I didn't get the meaning of your title until the end of your post. The Mikado, right?

Yes the Lord High Executioner's song from Gilbert and Sullivan's _The Mikado_, wherein the Lord High Executioner reveals his plans for people who chew peppermint and puff it in your face and so on. This death list is a gift because the company can update it, adding today's obnoxious habits and annoying creeps to the list of those who'll never be missed, to the amusement of the audience. The United Nations is very rich in people who'd "none of them be missed". And in this case the Muslim nations like Indonesia are putting forward the idea. Well all right! An Afghan's angry rat-tat-tat would shut old Yasser's lying trap. He never would be missed. No he never would be missed. Insert your own favorites at will. Or have we done this before with the poetry? :)

It's a good idea. They all kill each other off and we got nothing to worry about.

Evlstu, It's not you. I have a funny feeling quite a few Afghans would react along the lines you seem to suggest.

Pretend. Pretend. He's the Lord Most High Peacekeeper. Attend. Attend. As he makes his speech. Then he leaves the breach. And the people die. Oh my, oh my. etc....
