About a year and a half ago, I was driving in the East Village area of Manhattan with a colleague from Pakistan. He was complaining that Americans under-rated the amount of civilization in Pakistan. He started to name all the things Pakistan had- banks, amusment parks, movies, etc, etc, etc. We passed a person with brightly colored hair, yellow and blue, I recall. I gestured. "No," my friend admitted, "we do not have THAT in Pakistan." The point is, we have learned something here. There is conflict between different values, its true. But, if you can tolerate the differences, they are fun and educational, they add diversity, challenge, and a sense of the unexpected to life. When you are exposed to a great diversity, like we are, you learn to see the interesting things about it. Different values can cause conflict, but if the conflict is mental and not physical, I am in favor of it. We have Oriental immigrants. They have some different ideas about respect to families. Good. Maybe we can learn from them. (Maybe they will learn from us, and Korean-American teenagers will ignore their parents.) As long as the conflict between ethnic groups is not a violent or hurtful one, I really don't care if someone celebrates Kwanzaa and is a gay midget Tibetan vegetarian communist. There is really only one value we cannot tolerate. When a person seeks to cause harm to our civilization because of his "values", that crosses the line, and is unacceptable, and that causes conflict.
